A Bird's Eye View

A unique rural area in the North Pennines

High in the North Pennines, three rivers start their journey to the sea.  The Tyne’s journey begins on Alston Moor, a landscape so inspiring that poets write about it, artists have painted it for generations, and it has been declared part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  The lead and silver mining that brought people here from across Europe has left an unparalleled history in the landscape and in the settlements; farming continues to maintain the miles of drystone walls and small woodlands to shelter the sheep; and a lively community lives, works and plays, with an annual pantomime, music festival, galas, interesting shops, and much, much more.
